Direct to Garment (DTG)

Direct to Garment (DTG) printing puts your design directly onto the garment, with no transparent film and no stiffness. The ink is absorbed into the fabric, so the design feels soft and close to the garment rather than sitting on top of it like a transfer.

Because the process prints full color directly, it’s ideal for replicating photographs and intricate designs with many colors and fine detail. It’s a strong choice when a design would be hard to reproduce with screen printing or a heat transfer.

DTG works best on light-colored garments, where the ink shows as it’s designed. It is also a water-based, eco-friendly process, using inks that come in pouches rather than plastic cartridges.

Whether you’re printing a single custom shirt or a large order, DTG gives vibrant, detailed results that hold up through washing.

Key Features
  • Full color, including detailed pictures and designs with many colors
  • Soft, breathable print with no film or stiffness
  • Print area up to 14 × 16 inches
  • No set-up fee and no minimum order
  • Small runs and large orders for any occasion

Occasions

DTG is a great fit for parties, reunions, gifts and work events. Because it prints full-color photos and detailed artwork with no set-up fee, you can create something personal and memorable without a big upfront cost.
  • Parties and celebrations: birthdays, bachelorette and bachelor parties, and milestone birthdays can get custom shirts with photos, inside jokes or a group design
  • Reunions: a school, sports team or club logo, or a class or family photo, can be printed for everyone attending
  • Gifts: a shirt with a favorite photo, pet or quote makes a thoughtful gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays or the holidays
  • Work events: staff shirts, company anniversaries, farewells and team-building days can carry your company branding or a fun design

How it works

  1. Garments are laid down to create a smooth surface for printing.
  2. The design is printed directly onto the garment.
  3. The ink dries and cures with heat.

A Brief History

DTG printing began in the United States in 1996, when DIS of Bradenton, Florida released the Revolution printer. Commercial DTG took off around 2004, and Brother’s GT-541 in 2005 was the first DTG printer built specifically for the process.

We started with the GT-541 and now run the Brother GTX.
